Some Assembly Required – Part 3
Last Assembly – 1/20/2008
The last assembly step. The crest is glued onto the long spindles.
This is the final, and simplest, assembly step. Only two pieces. I put glue into the holes on the underside of the crest. Then, it is put onto the ends of the long spindles. Sounds easy.
Putting the crest simultaneously onto seven spindles that splay outward requires a bit of patience. Get each spindle started into its hole, working from one side to the other. Then, ease it down about 1/8 inch at a time. I use a rubber mallet and gently tap the top of the crest from one side to the other.
Each spindle goes about 1 inch into the crest. As I near one inch, I carefully adjust how far onto the spindle I go to get the crest even from side to side.
If everything goes smoothly, a PVA glue is fine. If more time is desired during assembly, I use epoxy because the PVA will start to set within 8 to 10 minutes.
With the crest in place, the chair is fully assembled and looks ready for finishing. Looks can be deceiving. (January, 2008)
